Responders in Action

Emergency First Response® would like to congratulate the following Emergency Responders who put their training into action when called upon to offer assistance.

In Germany

Emergency Responder: Jan-Philipp Lauer

Action: On his way home from returning a package, Jan-Philipp saw an old lady shouting to him from the second story of a building. Visibly shaken and confused, she said her son had locked her in and that she couldn’t breathe well. He immediately called for an ambulance, and communicated to the dispatcher the difficulties paramedics might have in reaching her. Jan-Philipp stayed with the victim and tried to calm her until emergency services arrived.

EFR® Instructor Trainer: Michael Hackel-de Witt (917965)

In South Africa

Emergency Responder: Nathaneo Pretorius

Action: While he was waiting outside a pharmacy, a woman approached Nathaneo saying one of her employees had collapsed in the elevator. Nathaneo’s training kicked in and he responded immediately – he assessed the situation, called paramedics, and began compressions with CPR. Emergency services arrived 10 to 15 minutes later to take over; after the emergency, one of the paramedics later mentioned to Nathaneo that he’d been trained well.

EFR Instructor: Devon Ford (360852)

In the USA

Emergency Responder: Michael Dovigi

Action: A man was eating a turkey leg and stopped walking before he could reach his seat nearby. Michael walked over to ask if everything was okay, but got no response. Going in front of the victim, Michael noticed he was unable to breathe and was turning blue in the face. Michael asked the man, who weighed over 160 kg/350 lbs, to remain standing, and explained that he was going to perform abdominal thrusts. Doing so, Michael successfully cleared the airway, with the patient beginning to talk and breathe almost immediately.

EFR Instructor: Al Reid (257884)
