Eilat, Jerusalem, the Dead Sea – A winter adventure in Israel

This year’s first diving expedition took us to the Israeli resort of Eilat, on the coast of the Red Sea.

We landed at Ramon Airport in the immediate vicinity of Eilat. We had good weather throughout our stay in Israel, but there was some wind. The sea was warm, a pleasant 21-22°C at all depths.

We visited all of the most important dive sites on this part of the Israeli coast, with the most impressive ones being Dolphins Reef, diving with dolphins, and the always impressive “Satil” shipwreck. There were two sites on the North Beach that we had not been diving at before – the “Sun Boat” shipwreck and the Coral Farm. The visibility was great everywhere, and we encountered lionfish, frog fish, crocodile fish, dolphins, turtles, moray eels and more!

We also used this visit to work with our fellow Mares Ambassadors Noam Kortler and Boaz Samorai and model Sigala Shoham, who is the regional SSI manager. We tested, filmed and photographed new products, such as the Sirius computer, Pro Therm semi-dry suit and increasingly popular Horizon SCR rebreather.

Our logistical support for this trip came from Marina Divers diving center.

A trip to Israel is not complete without visiting the attractive tourist and historical sights. We visited the Dead Sea, a lake located over 396 meters below sea level. It is famous for its high salinity. Unfortunately, due to the influence of people and the reduction of the inflow of water from the Jordan River which feeds it, the water level in the lake is dropping by about 1 meter per year. It belongs to a group of endangered lakes, and there are plans in Israel and Jordan to aid in its rescue and recovery.

A visit to Jerusalem is really difficult to describe in words. The city is a mix of different religions, cultures, architecture and lifestyles. Half a day spent there gave us just a glimpse which confirmed the fact that it is necessary to set aside additional time to visit it better. Perhaps we will be able to do so during our next visit to Israel which is planned later this year, in November. Join us!
