The PADI Course Director rating is the highest and most respected professional level in recreational scuba diving. It represents not only a personal milestone, but also a professional commitment to top-level training, leadership and excellence.
Course Directors are highly sought after by PADI Instructor Development Centers and Resorts to lead Instructor Development Courses. They play a key role in shaping the future of the diving industry — mentoring the next generation of PADI Pros, who will in turn inspire countless students to discover and protect our underwater world.
The Path to the Course Director Training Course (CDTC)
The journey to becoming a Course Director culminates in the Course Director Training Course (CDTC). It takes significant personal commitment to be accepted into the course. The application process evaluates each candidate’s teaching history, commitment to continuing education, professional conduct and readiness to contribute to an Instructor Development Center or Resort. The training itself is a seven-day immersive program that challenges candidates to refine their leadership, business planning, evaluation and counselling skills.
Because of this, some PADI Professionals may view the CDTC with trepidation. Is all that effort really worth it? The answer from our most recent CDTC graduates is a resounding yes.
First-Hand Experiences From the June 2025 CDTC
We asked several newly certified Course Directors to reflect on their experience at the June 2025 CDTC in the Dominican Republic. Here’s what they had to say.
What To Expect
The Course Director Training Course (CDTC) is an intense, transformative journey, designed not only to refine your skills as an instructor but to challenge, inspire and connect you with some of the most passionate professionals in diving.
During the course, you’ll dive into complex assignments and be surrounded by fellow candidates who are just as committed as you are. The atmosphere is electric, part nerves, part excitement, as you push beyond your comfort zone and discover just how much you’re capable of.
“You start off with shaky legs – full IDC flashbacks. Who’s in my team? What assignments will I get? And then BOOM — the train takes off. Every day’s packed with insights, smart hacks from staff, and pure gold tips from your teammates. Somewhere between the pressure and the hustle, you build friendships, plan dive trips, and seriously level up.
And suddenly… it’s over. You’re holding that Course Director badge like, ‘I did it.’ Did I doubt it at first? Yep. Regrets? Not one.”
– Mickel Stans, PADI Course Director #361679
Throughout the program, you’ll be guided by PADI Instructor Development staff who lead by example, sharing their expertise while fostering an environment of collaboration and professional growth. Every moment is designed to prepare you not just to teach at the highest level, but to lead with confidence, empathy and excellence.
“Participating in the CDTC has been one of the most intense and enriching experiences of my diving career. From day one, I felt part of a committed, diverse and passionate group, all with the same goal — to train ourselves in order to train others.
The program exceeded my expectations. I not only gained pedagogical and technical tools that will help me become a better Course Director, but I also went through a personal growth journey, supported by a team of instructors who showed outstanding professionalism and human quality.
I leave with valuable lessons, great friendships, and a renewed motivation to keep sharing my passion for diving. I’m deeply grateful to have been part of this unforgettable experience.”
– Francisco Javier Galan Jaramillo, PADI Course Director #294025

Make Lifelong Connections
Beyond the skills and certifications, one of the most rewarding aspects of the CDTC is the strong sense of community that forms among candidates. You’ll arrive as individuals — PADI Pros from around the globe with unique backgrounds, teaching styles and perspectives – but you’ll leave as a close-knit group, bonded by shared challenges, unforgettable moments, and a passion for diving education.
“The CDTC in the Dominican Republic in 2025 was an unforgettable experience. The PADI staff were outstanding, professional, supportive and genuinely invested in our success. Their guidance and encouragement made a challenging course feel fun and achievable every step of the way.
One of the best parts of the course was the amazing connection and support between all of us candidates. We came from all over with different backgrounds, but by the end, we were a tight group of friends, all sharing the same passion for diving and teaching.
This experience didn’t just prepare me to be a Course Director, it really shaped how I want to run my own PADI IDCs. I’m excited to create a positive, supportive vibe where future instructors feel confident, motivated, and part of something bigger, just like I did during the CDTC.
Thank you to the entire PADI team for creating such a transformative and inspiring experience.”
– Mark A. Hext, ADI Course Director #112061
You’ll also find unwavering support from PADI staff and your fellow teammates. Everyone will celebrate your wins and help troubleshoot your challenges.
“Just returned from the CDTC in the Dominican Republic. [I] had a real blast, my team were fab and so were the PADI Team. My team supported and helped each other with assignments the whole time. The PADI team were always available to give friendly advice. Came home with a tight network of new friends from all around the world. [I] thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Want my advice? Do it!“
– Rowan Egan, PADI Course Director #404607
The CDTC doesn’t just develop you as a professional; it immerses you in a global community of like-minded leaders who will continue to inspire, support and dive with you for years to come.
