The current Instructor Development Course (IDC) has a solid structure and content that prepares new PADI Instructors for their teaching careers. However, since its launch several years ago, there have been new PADI programs, services and initiatives released that needed to be covered. For example, Project AWARE changed to PADI AWARE®, but references to Project AWARE remained in the IDC curriculum.
This update ensures that PADI’s newest instructors get the most current information and are set up to better use all the tools, especially digital resources, available to them.
Changes occurred to three major components:
- IDC eLearning
- PADI Course Director Manual
- PADI’s Guide to Teaching
Here are update highlights along with answers to common questions.
IDC eLearning
- Updated information about:
- PADI’s brand promise and mission

- Using Discover Scuba Diving eLearning and the DSD Participant Management page
- PADI Digital Ecosystem and available tools, such as PADI Adventures
, Dive Guides® and PADI ClubTM, that help connect divers to PADI Members.
- Emphasized that for most eLearners, knowledge development review is usually prescriptive using Quick Reviews as assessments.
| Question: Does everyone who has access to the IDC Digital Crew-pak get the updated IDC eLearning program? Answer: Yes. All PADI Instructors have access to the IDC Digital Crew-pak as part of your Digital Suite membership benefit. Question: What languages are available? |

Question: Where can you get more information about changes to the curriculum section, like the new Sales Techniques Workshop? |
PADI’s Guide to Teaching
Undergoing the biggest revision, PADI’s Guide to Teaching was reorganized, updated and expanded to include more PADI courses and programs. This essential companion tool to the PADI Instructor Manual is now available digitally on the PADI Pros’ Site for all PADI Instructors, not just instructor candidates. PADI Instructors can find it in their Digital Suite, and it’s also available for new instructor candidates in their IDC Digital Crew-pak.
Key changes include:
- PADI Organization section explains the PADI System, PADI’s Environmental and Social Responsibility and international recognition.
- Training Considerations section overviews teaching philosophy and approach, including adaptive techniques and child protection guidelines.
- Teaching Techniques section includes all the previous recommendations for the core course with the addition of suggestions for the Junior Divemaster course and DSD Leadership Internship. The new PADI Seal Team Program pages are also included.
- Legal Responsibility, Risk Management and Quality Management section has been updated with current information about trends and how to avoid customer service complaints.
| Question: Is there a print version of PADI’s Guide to Teaching? Answer: No. Similar to other PADI instructional manuals that are no longer printed, PADI’s Guide to Teaching can be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF. This allows it to have links to additional resources, such as the PADI Pros’ Site or “How To” videos for teaching the PADI Rescue Diver and Divemaster courses. Question: Can you print out pages from the digital version? |
