Introducing Instagram’s Latest Feature – Reels

Instagram Reels

The world of social media is constantly evolving as platforms continue to revolutionise the way we engage with, share and create content. Social media giants like Instagram, are frequently having to develop in-app features to compete with the functionalities of newer social media platforms – which is how Instagram Reels was formed.

What is Instagram Reels?

Created to compete with the viral app TikTok, Reels is a new video content format allowing users to create and share short-form video up to 30 seconds in length. Unlike Instagram Stories that disappear after 24 hours, Reels will remain on your profile under the Reels icon and within your feed (if you choose to share it there). With access to Reels extensive video editing features, you can add music, text, augmented reality effects and even speed up or slow down your clip, without any video editing skills.

Where can you find Reels on Instagram?

You can find Reels a number of ways in the Instagram app:

  • On your Instagram homepage feed if the accounts you’re following have posted a Reel to their feed.
  • On your profile if you’ve shared a Reel to your account.
  • At the top of the Explore page.
  • In the menu bar at the bottom of your home screen (you will need the latest version of Instagram to view the new app layout).

How can Reels benefit my dive shop?

With over 1 billion active users scrolling through Instagram each month, Reels provide plenty of opportunities for businesses to beat the algorithm and reach a new audience. Reels will be shared to the Explore page which means your content can be seen by anyone and everyone on Instagram. Furthermore, as short-form video is the top performing form of content on social media, you’re more likely to keep your existing followers engaged with your posts.

While a lack of time and resources can prevent dive shops from creating video content, Reels easy-to-use features help make the editing process a little easier. From timers to effects and editing tools, people with absolutely no editing skills, can create an engaging clip within minutes. You won’t even need to download another video editing tool as you have everything you need in the app!

Best Practices

If you’re wanting to try your hand at creating your first Instagram Reel, make sure to follow these simple best practices:

  • Post your Reels to your Instagram feed and share that post to your story for additional exposure.
  • Aim to post around two times per week (if resources permit).
  • Monitor your Reels comments and performance on each individual post (you will be unable to view this data through Facebook Creator Studio).
  • Keep your captions concise and relevant to the video you’re sharing.
  • Participate in challenges and video trends. You can find what’s trending by keeping up-to-date with the latest Reels through the Explore page.
